819 LOCAL CHILDREN RECEIVED DONATED BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES THROUGH “STUFF THE BUS”
United Way of Lebanon County and the Salvation Army recently distributed nearly 15,700 donated school supplies, including new backpacks, to 819 local kids during the 8th annual “Stuff the Bus” event.
Over 250 children received backpacks and school supply packages at the Salvation Army’s annual “Back to School Carnival” in mid-August. Local kids took part in numerous carnival activities including bean bag toss, mini golf, face painting and more to win even more school supplies.
Additional school supply deliveries were made to the following school districts and day care centers: Lebanon School District, Lebanon County MH/ID/EI, Rojas Family day care, Agape Family Shelter, Cornwall Lebanon School District, ELCO School District, Northern Lebanon School District, the Lebanon County Head Start program and Luthercare for kids.
In addition to 200 new or used books, the following school supplies were also collected and/or purchased with monetary donations:
- 5,839 pencils
- 3,455 pens
- 1,062 notebooks
- 1,026 glue sticks and bottles
- 875 folders
- 447 packs of crayons
- 426 rulers
- 405 erasers
- 234 highlighters
- 213 pencil boxes
- 161 pairs of scissors
- 153 packs of colored pencils
- 138 packs of markers
- and numerous packs of index cards, notebook paper, construction paper and calculators.
United Way thanks Brightbill Body Works for donating the “Stuff the Bus” school bus that was parked at the following seven collection sites around the county from July 11 – 24: Dollar General in Jonestown, Kohl’s, Myerstown Community Library, Staples, Sunset Grocery Outlet, Walmart Lebanon and Walmart Palmyra.
An additional thank you is extended to the following businesses and organizations which held “Stuff the Bus” collections and/or donated funds: The Hershey Company, The Hershey Lodge, Lebanon Federal Credit Union, Brentwood Industries, Cargill, Lebanon County Library, Annville Free Library, Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, Lebanon County 4H Club, and several local churches. Thank you to all volunteers who gave of their time to collect, count and distribute donations.
